Infrared Non-Contact Head Sensor, for Control of Wheelchair Movements
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a new human-machine interface for controlling a wheelchair by head movements. The position of the head is determined by use of infrared sensors, with no parts attached to the head of the user. The placement of the infrared sensors are behind the head of the user, so that the field of view is not limited. Tests on a wheelchair have shown that the system is functioning in real life, and that the vehicle can be driven at normal speeds in a simple and natural way. The behaviour of the sensor and the generated commands are fully programable, so it can be adapted easily to other constrains or capabilities of potential users.

Position Detection Based on Intensities of Reflected Infrared Light
This thesis focus on development of methods for using infrared sensors for position detection. There exists various methods where optical sensors are used to give position estimates, many utilizing multiple cameras. The overall approach in this thesis is to base a position detection sensor system on inputs from an array of infrared emitters and receivers. The signals from the emitters are refle...
متن کاملFlexible Bi-modal Control Modes for Hands-Free Operation of a Wheelchair by Head Movements and Facial Expressions
Many kinds of head movements and facial expressions based human machine interfaces (HMIs) have been developed for hands-free control of electricpowered wheelchairs in order to assist disabled and elderly people. Most of these HMIs have a fixed configuration and do not allow users to choose a configuration suitable to their needs. It becomes necessary to provide users with different control mode...
متن کاملDesign and Development of Head Motion Controlled Wheelchair
The aim of the project is to design a wheelchair tilt communicator system that could operate the wheelchair of the handicapped person with the help of tilt of head movements. This system could be used by physically disable persons who cannot move their hands or legs but make head and eye motions. This wheelchair could be operated in any direction using head tilt movements by the handicapped per...
متن کاملA Flexible Bio-Signal Based HMI for Hands-Free Control of an Electric Powered Wheelchair
This paper presents a bio-signal based human machine interface (HMI) for hands-free control of an electric powered wheelchair. In this novel HMI, an Emotive EPOC sensor is deployed to detect facial expressions and head movements of users, which are then recognized and converted to four uni-modal control modes and two bi-modal control modes to operate the wheelchair. Nine facial expressions and ...
متن کاملWheelchair Movement Control VIA Human Eye Blinks
Many disorders can disrupt the neuromuscular channels used by the brain to communicate with and control its external environment. Patients with severe neural disorders lose most of voluntary muscle control. Some patients can control their eye movements and may be able to communicate. In the absence of methods for repairing the damage done by these disorders, the only option for restoring functi...
